Dog Breed Profiles: Lakeland Terrier

Lakeland Terriers, also known as the Patterdale, Fell, Cumberland and Westmoreland Terriers, were first developed in the Lake Districts of England to protect sheep from foxes. They are one of the oldest working terrier breeds, dating to before their AKC registration in 1934!

“Lakies” come in a variety of colors including blue, black, liver, red and wheaten with or without a patch of color over the back and shoulders called a “saddle”.  They have a dense wiry coat and are minimal shedders, though they do need to be groomed and clipped regularly.

While generally a show dog or family companion today, their “Terrier” instincts makes Lakelands fierce competitors in earthdog events.

Their energy level makes them best suited for an active lifestyle. They are very intelligent and easy to train, but be careful not to let the dog do the training! Lakelands never tire of strategizing, and they love a good brainteaser, which may make leaving them at home alone a bit of a challenge.
